Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman-Hughes, 1972 and 2014
Both by Dan Bagan
Wanna see my cry like a baby? Ask me who these women were.
Hughes’ father was beaten nearly to death by the KKK when she was a kid, and what does she do? Become an activist to try and stop that from happening to other people. She raised money to bail civil rights protesters out of jail. She helped women get out of abusive situations by providing shelter for them until they got on their feet. She founded an agency that helped women get to work without having to leave their children alone, because childcare in the 1970s? Not really a thing. In fact, a famous feminist line in the 70s was “every housewife is one man away from welfare.”
Then she teamed up with Steinman to found the Women’s Action Alliance, which created the first battered women’s shelters in history. They attacked women’s rights issues through boots on the ground activism, problem solving, and communication. They stomped over barriers of race and class to meet women where they were: mostly mothers who wanted better for themselves and their children.
I wasn’t aware that strong, sexually empowered women are in fact a demeaning social trope.
If you had ever played the games, or even mildly researched them, you’d know that Bayonetta is both highly sexualized for the benefit of the viewer AS WELL as being sexually empowered for herself. If you want to hate the former, you have to hate the latter, and that’s rather misogynistic, don’t you think?
Also, just gonna toss this out there: Bayonetta’s designer, Mari Shimazaki, has said that she designed Bayonetta as a power fantasy for herself and that Bayonetta’s personality and attitude is “what she aspires to be more like” because she wants to feel sexy for her own sake, not society’s and also she’s tired of women being both expected to and being shamed for trying to look beautiful. She simply wants to feel powerful, but also beautiful.
Happening Now (10.8.14): Oh dear God, not again. Another life lost in St Louis. So little information right now, but it seems that an unarmed 18-year old boy was tased then shot 16 times by an officer, possibly off-duty. Not clear what provoked the event, but I’ll keep you updated as info is released. #staywoke #blacklivesmatter
Be weary of the police reports so far. ALL witness statements seem to contradict it, but the police refuse to interview any of them. They seem to be concocting a story right now to cover for the officer. It’s looking real grim right now.
